Buying a wig can be the start of a completely different set of experiences. When you're really thinking about changing your look and stepping away from the negative side of hair loss, you can actually find wigs that compliment your style and personality. Unfortunately, the way we feel about wigs has to change as well. We can no longer just assume that wearing a wig means that you're doing something unnatural or something that isn't socially acceptable. People will still continue to become your friends, colleagues, and even significant others -- yes, even if you're wearing a wig.
Of course, now that we've gotten that out of the way, there's another question rearing its ugly head: just how do we figure out what type of wig to buy when there is a virtually unlimited selection?
There are really three things that you need to look for before you purchase your first wig -- here's what you need to know.
First and foremost, you need to really stop and think about the type of wig that you really want. Depending on your budget, you'll want to lean towards a human hair wig or a synthetic hair wig. There are really pros and cons to each type of wig. If you really want to go with the most natural looking wig, you really need to lean towards the human hair wig. Keep in mind that you will have to regularly get your human hair wig styled by a beautician in order to keep it looking nice. This is not a problem with synthetic wigs, as you don't have to do anything to keep the style looking nice except to wash it occasionally. If money is a bit tight, you might want to look into a synthetic wig -- they really are beautiful, you know!
From here, you will need to think about the style that you want for your wig. When you're just starting out in the world of wigs, you might be tempted to "go to extremes", so to speak. In other words, you might want to go with a super long curly wig if you've always had short hair or with a severely different color if you've always had dark hair. You might want to really go with something that's close to your natural hair color and length you had before you suffered hair loss or even if you just want to change up your look.
Finally, you will need to make sure that you really get the right size. If there's one thing that you really don't want, it's definitely a wig that really doesn't fit properly. It would be better to make sure that you go with something that will fit snugly than something that’s going to be too loose. Measuring the size of your head by running a measuring tape around your hairline is usually the best way to go here. The average head is around 21 - 22 inches, so you'll need to with a "small" or "large" if your head is smaller or larger than this.
Overall, these are just three things to look for before you buy that first wig. As long as you consider these three points before you commit to a purchase, you should be just fine!
